We come to you with a breaking news bulletin! Toronto’s rising stars Thunderheist are taking, gasp, A BREAK! After three years of non-stop touring, working one end of the globe to the other, playing gay porn award show after parties (yes, it’s true – probably the strangest experience I’ve ever had, Grahmzilla tells me) and just working the showbiz hustle they are taking a well deserved and much needed break. Psst, blogosphere – this is your cue to begin the rumours.
I had the chance to speak candidly with Grahmzilla, producer/DJ from the group, about all the spin that’s been going on regarding the break and how the rumour mill has been working overtime, “We’ve been through so much together as a group – the good, the bad & the ugly. This break is upsetting to some, who are really into Thunderheist, but really, we were traveling from one side of the country to the other and I know I personally was dying. I was pretty exhausted.”
Feeling somewhat nomadic and homeless, Grahm tells me it felt nice to get home to sleep in his own bed [rather than in airports and hotels] but also just sleep in general. “People are making this break a bigger deal then it needs to be. But really, we both need this to get it back to the music and back to making beats. Revisit the projects we were doing before we started Thunderheist. When we resume the group, we’ll have a plan.” Perhaps world domination plans?
Throughout the last three years, Thunderheist has helped other dance artists in the Canadian scene and according to the Globe & Mail, they named Thunderheist one of the leaders of Toronto’s electro scene. Is it a heavy cross to carry? Grahm says, “Nah, I want some bling to that effect! Toronto has a good dance scene. It’s nice to know that we helped blaze a trail for others coming up. One of the things on the to-do list, help promote good music / good stuff that’s coming up.” Thing is, the man has an ear for good shit. So much so, apparently Grahm is working on a pod cast for CBC Radio 3 where he’ll get to promote some of the Canadian artists he feels like a proud parent to (“I’ve been with Bonjay (Toronto) from the start and they don’t get enough love.”) and others he feels are not getting enough hype: U-Tern (Vancouver), Small Town Romeo (Calgary), CFCF (Toronto), Love and Electrik (Vancouver), Nacho Lovers (Toronto), Megasoid (MTL) and Fan Death (Vancouver) –just to name a few. “It wasn’t easy putting together these pod casts, but if I can help be an ambassador to the electronic music scene in Canada, then I’m going to do it when I can. It’s all about community and support.”
So while Thunderheist might on hold while they recharge their batteries (I asked Grahm if he was the Energizer bunny, to which he laughed), both Grahmzilla and Isis are not. Think of this as more of musical interlude rather than a break peeps. Because the music won’t be stopping anytime soon, case in point, Grahm’s already busy working on beats.
