Posted on 21 May 2009 by Brian

DJ Chris Douridas features a rare interview with legendary musician Sly Stone on Memorial Day, May 25 at 11am PSTKCRW (89.9FM and KCRW.com). The elusive musician talks about his personal history and career while Chris spins classic hits from his band Sly and the Family Stone, as well as a special unreleased track– a song by his family’s gospel band, The Stewart Four.  Chris will be a guest host on Morning Becomes Eclectic, filling in for Music Director Jason Bentley, on May 25 and 26, 2009. on

“As a child growing up in Chicago, Sly Stone was my first musical hero. His legacy is the building of an essential bridge between rock and roll, R&B and psychedelia. Sly helped lay the groundwork for the eventuality of hip hop culture. His impact on contemporary music cannot be overstated,” said Douridas.

The Texas-born, California-raised musician talks to Chris about growing up on gospel with his family, facing fame for the first time while on stage with Sam Cooke and an intriguing story about Charles Manson. Sly talks about his history as a radio DJ in San Francisco and how that brought him to the realization that he could make music.

“When I was on the radio, I listened to everybody’s songs, I played everybody’s songs on the radio. And I thought…I can do that. And that’s when I tried it. Good thing it worked out,” said Stone.

Stone was a pioneer for forming a mixed gender, mixed race band that played a critical role in the development of funk and psychedelic music in the 1960’s and 70’s.

Tune in on Monday, May 25 at 11am on KCRW and KCRW.com to hear Sly share the stories behind his work.
