Live Review: Ear Pwr, Ninjasonik & Japanther The Deleon White Gallery Toronto Friday November 13, 2009

Posted on 15 November 2009 by Ama Scriver

I think someone spiked the punch at this party because I don’t believe there was one person who wasn’t on their feet and getting down.  This evening was all about the music and an odd combination at that.  First up, we had Ear Pwr from Baltimore/North Carolina.  From the beginning of their set, these two were killing it.  Immediately, I got a very Crystal Castles-esque vibe from them however without the shitty strobe lights or the shitty attitude. They went through songs like, “Future Eyes” with such a disco punk mentality that I totally fell in love with Devin, with his ginger afro.  He was pulling splits all over the place and basically dry-humping this guy.  It was hilarious.  They put on an amazing show.  Sarah didn’t seem half as lively though; consider how upbeat and happy their music was.  Regardless, they made me a fan.

Next up was Ninjasonik and after all the drama their performance caused during NXNE, I was surprised they wanted to come back to Toronto.  Well, let’s just say – the fans in Toronto love them and this performance got out of HAND.  Singing classics like “Someone’s Gunna Get Pregnant” and “Daylight” it turned into a damned near mosh pit in an art gallery.  Let’s just say, they have that power on the crowd.  There was no difference between them and the crowd – they just wilded out with everyone.  The one thing I can say with having seen Ninjasonik now a few times is that you always know what you’re getting with them.  They are raw and they are real and they are tight performers.  Some of Brooklyn’s finest.  They are still on the underground tip though.  So don’t sleep on them too long.

Last but not least was Japanther, who were playing some killer hardcore punk but with an arty edge.  I’m not entirely sure that makes sense, had to be there.  By this time, it was starting to stank harder worse than a sweaty gym sock.  But I guess, the music was appropriate.  Plus, if I thought the mosh pit was bad before – it was getting worse now.  I thought Ian Vanek was going to bash through his drum kit, for sure.   This is sure to be a night I won’t forget anytime soon.
